Born and raised in nearby historic Appomattox, Jerry
is the son of the late Henry W. "Billy" Conner
and Betty K. Connor. He graduated high school in 1976,
where he was a 4-year letterman on the high school golf
team and cross country team.
In 1976, he entered Virginia Tech to study business,
and participate in the golf program. He started several
matches and tournaments as a freshman. After 2 years
at Tech, he transferred to Lynchburg College to get
more playing time. Playing 3 years at Lynchburg he was
part of the team that placed 5th in the NCAA tournament
in 1981. He graduated with a BA in physical education.
As a young amateur he won 17 individual titles that
included club championships, local invitation tournaments,
plus the Lynchburg City Championship.
He
turned pro in 1981 as the assistant golf professional
at Winton Country Club under the direction of Billy
McBride, Jr. He finished his apprenticeship at Oakwood
Country Club under Brian Fedder in 1983 before becoming
the first assistant at Countryside Golf Course in Roanoke,
Virginia.
In
1985 he became the Head Golf Professional at Goose Creek
Golf Course in Leesburg, Virginia. After 2 years he
decided to enter private business but it only lasted
2 years before he had a desire to get back into the
golf business.
In
1989 a dream was realized when he began working for
Ted Counts in constructing London Downs. Working closely
with architect Russell Breeden and construction superintendent
Ralph Firebaugh, he was in on every aspect of the project
from rough grading to seeding to irrigation. Once the
course was opened in 1991, he became the Head Professional.
He
is married to the former Beverly Ann Carter, and they
have a daughter, Brittany, and a son, Brandon.
