| Located
in historic Bedford County, London Downs Golf Club opened
June 1st, 1991. It was designed and built by renowned
course architect Russell Breeden, and is owned and operated
by Ted Counts. It quickly became a favorite for golfers
all over central and southwest Virginia.
With
gently rolling hills and undulating greens, the course
is challenging but fair. London Downs is always in great
condition. The bent grass greens are true and moderately
quick. Bermuda grass fairways are plush in the summer
and are over seeded in the fall to maintain a good playing
surface in the winter months. From the tips the course
measures 7118 yards. The official yardage is 6938 (Championship),
6347 (Regular), 5624 (Seniors), and 4953 (Ladies). There
are 2 main lakes and 10 ponds throughout the course,
and a beautiful view of the Peaks of Otter can be seen
as you tee off on the 1st hole.
London
Downs has hosted two SBC Futures tour events and also
the Teardrop tour, and plays host to numerous charity
and corporate events throughout the year.
About
75% of the play is public with special rates for seniors
on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and ladies on Mondays. Every
year from November 1st until the end of February, London
Downs offers its Winter special.
Amenities
include a large practice green, driving range, pro shop,
snack bar and outdoor pavilion for tournaments and outings.
PGA and LPGA professionals are available for lessons
by appointment.
